Pro-Life ... or Pro-People?
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.”
(Ephesians 1:3–4, ESV)
Sometimes I think we are so “pro-life” that we devalue people.
Let me explain.
I am pro-life, but more so I would say I try to be “pro-people”. God does not distinguish between pre-born or born, young or old, religious or not; He does not care what gender or race or cultural background or our past choices. He knows and loves each one of us just the same.
So, I want to care just as much for the unborn as for the mother or couple who has made the choice to have an abortion. While I would never advise toward an abortion, those who have made that choice need the love and truth of Jesus just the same. For them, there is a grief, a weight they will carry the rest of their lives. The men can be affected just as deeply as the ladies.
With this in mind, let us think carefully of what signs we hold up. Let us value each person we encounter, taking opportunity to serve them no matter their situation, choices, or personality. Let us be not just “pro-life” but “pro-people”. Let us love and serve those younger and those older, those of similar backgrounds and those of different ones, those who have had a good life and those who have faced challenge after challenge.
May we know the blessing of Christ in our lives today and forever! May we pass that blessing on to others as well!
