Politics ... ugh!
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
(Romans 13:1, ESV)
To what degree should we engage ourselves on the political level of our society? What are the best ways to participate in discussion around and the development of best policies and practices for our church, community, province, nation, and world?
With the COVID pandemic, it has become apparent that many of us carry a deep distrust of our government leaders; in fact, I even see a defiant attitude in many of us. While I also often struggle to trust and follow our leaders, when we consider the verse above and the passage it is in, we are called to be submissive, to uphold our leaders in prayer, and to be servant-hearted.
On a church level, your prayers and expressions of support have been greatly appreciated by the Elders. We know that not all our choices have made sense or have been easy to accept, but we are working to prayerfully make the best decisions, erring on the side of caution as we find our way forward through this re-opening process.
I call us to participate in / to engage in the processes of our church and society. In the same way we participate in making decisions at home or the work place, it is important we also participate at church, community, and political levels. Be it attending our semi-annual general meeting, be it voting in elections, be it praying for our leaders, let us engage relationally and with the issues so our Christian voice of love and truth is heard.
