Taking A Posture of Service
“[Jesus] rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”
(John 13:4–5, ESV)
Many of us have varying responses to not only COVID but the handling of it by others. While some speak critically, others face crippling anxiety. While some are very verbal about opinions and preferences, others quietly do their best to survive the heightened stress of life these days.
We at NCC have worked hard to be respectful of one another and of those making decisions about the handling of the circumstances our world finds itself in. Our goal has been to care for one another as people. This does not mean we lack opinions or have no concerns, but it takes the focus off ourselves and onto the needs of others.
In looking to the life of Jesus, I see a lot of difference between Him and the ruling Romans, but never did He scold, question, or chastise them. While He was confident in the outcome of life, others were worried; for those He cared and comforted. He spoke truth, even speaking bluntly at times, and not everyone liked what He had to say - but love and personal care always undergirded anything He said. He cared deeply for each person with whom He crossed paths with - from the Pharisee to the sinner, from the Roman to the Jew, from those who came to Him only once to those who came consistently.
Let us look to and emulate the example of Jesus - speaking truth boldly but in the most loving manner. Let us be consumed more with love than getting our way.
