A Day to Give Thanks
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, ESV)
There are so many news stories today that are striking me / weighing on my heart. This week we have seen the Taliban take over Afghanistan again causing chaos as western nations retreat and a sense of desperation sets in upon the Afghani people. Another significant earthquake hit Haiti, a nation already impoverished and ill-equipped for dealing with yet another tragedy. There is turmoil and struggle across the southern half of our province as wildfires continue to leave a wake of fear and loss. The struggle with COVID and vaccines continues, not only with the health challenges but also the relational hurts caused when opinions are allowed to dominate over grace.
The call of God to “give thanks in all circumstances” baffles me in light of all these things going on around us, but there is also such a sense of peace and rest within thanksgiving. When we release our cares to God, when we trust Him instead of worrying, when we live prayerfully, we find the peace of God.
As we have focused on in these last months, God is sovereign. He is in control - even when life seems out of control. He sees a picture broader and more accurate than we can ever see. Even in this turmoil - personally, provincially, nationally, and globally - let us choose to give thanks!
